Founded in mid-2016, the Cardiac surgery department of Bangladesh Specialized Hospital boasts a strong team, the members of which are veterans in their fields who have gained considerable professional experience in cardiac surgery, cardiac anaesthesia and ICU care, both inland and abroad. The infrastructure comprises dedicated Cardiac Surgical Operating Theatres and a dedicated Cardiac ICU with 8 individually monitored beds. The ICU staff nurse to patient ratio is 1:1 during all shifts. For renal failure patients requiring heart surgery we have the facility to perform hemodialysis (i.e. CRRT, SLED) in our Cardiac ICU.

Since its founding, the department has done over 1000 cardiac surgeries with excellent results. Spectrum comprises of coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement and congenital heart surgery.

Operations We Do Right Now

  1. Off-pump beating heart coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCABG).
  2. Conventional coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
  3. Total arterial CABG (in suitable patients).
  4. Valve replacement surgery (Aortic/Mitral/Double).
  5. Surgery for intracardiac tumours.
  6. Congenital heart surgery (ASD, VSD, TOF, PDA, DORV etc.).
  7. Endoscopic Vein Harvesting for CABG:

BSH is the first hospital in Bangladesh, which has started this programme routinely with collaboration of Harefield Hospital UK since 2019. The team is capable of performing venous conduit harvesting endoscopically placing an incision as small as 3 cm on the side of the knee. No more painful and ugly long scars on the patient’s legs or leg swelling.

What We Will Be Doing Soon:

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS):

With the required logistics support, our team is capable of performing minimally invasive cardiac operations (i.e. aortic valve replacement, mitral valve replacement or repair, atrial septal defect repair, cardiac tumour removal, MIDCAB) in the near future. MICS gives better cosmesis and reduces postoperative pain for patients who are fit for it.

Native valve repair without replacement:

Our team has the surgical expertise to be able to repair patient’s own diseased heart valves and assess the repair real-time. This would save the price of an artificial valve and the chance of artificial valve related complications.
